Uncovering the Mystery of the Olympic Airways Swizzle Stick: A Six-Ring Show

Updated: Jan 6

Have you ever stumbled upon a swizzle that piqued your curiosity and left you in awe of its history? Today, we delve into the world of the Olympic Airways Swizzle Stick and its six-ring logo.

The Enigmatic Swizzle Stick

The swizzle appears to be topped with the iconic Olympic rings, but not so fast... The distinctive five rings symbolize the five inhabited continents of the world. These are- Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania. This was the logo Olympic Airways chose to represent its brand until the Olympic Committee objected when the airline added a sixth ring to symbolize Greece.

Unveiling the Six-Ring Show

Olympic Airlines, a Greek airline formerly known as Olympic Airways, was founded on April 6, 1957, by the Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis until his death in 1975, after which the Greek government wholly owned it.

The first logo of the airline was a white eagle, resembling a propeller, featuring five rings and the name Olympic. Just two years after the first flight, Onassis asked his associates to design a new logo, and the colored rings were created. Onassis wanted to copy the five colored rings of the Olympic emblem, but the International Olympic Committee claimed the rights to the emblem, so a new six-ring logo was introduced. The first five rings stand for the five continents, while the sixth stands for Greece. The colors used were yellow, red, blue, green and black. Remember, some treasures are not measured by their price tag but by the stories they whisper throughout time.
